History of Rock: Formation of an Epic Genre

Turn on the volume. It is the time for some rock music. It was in the 1960’s when this underground form of music genre entered into the mainstream music. The formation is said to be in the years between 1940 – 50.

More importantly the rock music scene has always ever since then seen a continuous growth. It is in the audience where this form of music is not just the genre but also a place where people get the sense of belonging. It is that form of music that not only gets everyone crazy but also expresses his or her true thoughts through music.

Nadel Paris says that history of rock is as exciting as the genre itself. The number of genres combined together has developed the music of this form. Nadel Paris an EDM artist observes that the rock music has always seen a market that has never turned down the expectation of the rock bands. The term rock band in usual sense includes vocals, guitars, bass, drums and other additional instruments. It is that forms of genre in which the entire band works as a team and the collective effort by various group of musicians not only composes the songs but write their own songs.

Some say that it was in 1954 when Elvis Presley that was termed as the first rock music record. However, for many people the awareness of this form of music came by the formation of various bands like Beatles, ABBA. It was then when the music scene was seeing a very steady growth. The new forms of the rock music included shock rock, punk rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, jazz rock and even the funk rock. The legend in the world of guitar players Jimi Hendrix is probably the world’s favorite guitar player.

As one moves on the genres of rock music went on different routes. Some became soothing and soft, peppy and eye catchy for teenagers while others became heavier and faster in terms of guitar riffing. The pop genre is formed out of rock music and at the same time heavy metal is also a form of rock music. With the passage of the old era as it is said came the bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Metallica Motorhead and Deep Purple. These legends took the music to a whole new level and it is to be noted that now the rock music is spread all across the world.

England's Northern Soul Music

Northern Soul originated in 1960’s from northern England. They are the fanciest music and dance styles during that period. The Northern Soul got its name from the creative mind of a journalist named Dave Godin in one of his column in the magazine called Blues and Soul. The big part of Northern Souls original supporter arises from the mod movement. It is created out of their deep passion and appreciation of soul music. Time made quite a few changes when several mods accept the psychedelic movement. This resulted to numerous mods to love and patronize the original soundtrack of soul and ska. However some were later known and called skinheads and some develop their own hub of the Northern Soul picture.

Fashion statement of the first Northern Soul fashion are known to have button-down Ben Sherman shirts, baggy trousers or shrink to fit Levis, US bowling shirts, Poly-velt shoes, Blazers with centre vents and many buttons. This fashion statement creates fusion and wide acceptance among Northern Soul fanatic. It is also worthy to take note that during this period numerous dancers are seen wearing club badges.

The Northern Soul sound started in the Twisted Wheel Club located in Manchester. Then other clubs like Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch in Stoke, North Park in Kettering, The Catacombs in Wolverhampton, the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes, the Casino Club in Wigan, Blackpool Mecca, The Mojo and KGB clubs in Sheffield and Va Va's follow the groove and enjoy the pleasure of the Northern Soul.

The Northern Soul creates the most expensive collection in the world of musical. This resulted to high price of records because of its scarcity, quality of beat, impressive melody and lyrics. Supporters are drowning over the lyric of Northern Soul that covers the expression of heartache, pain and joy of the romantic story of love.

The love of the people of Northern Soul sound brings popularity among the artist. The fever of Northern Soul become so imminent that fame of the artist are truly notable and give breaks to great career in the industry. Among them are the Fascinations and the Velvelettes that grace the 70’s on top 40 UK

Mistakes to Avoid While Mixing Music Loops

Everyone will agree that music loops are not ordinary samples, but are small parts of sounds that are repeated continuously to form peppy numbers. Music creators and DJs worldwide create an amazing lot of music mix using such music loops and they know very well for the fact that such a music will fill the party halls and dance floors with youngsters and aged ones alike.

All one needs to create awesome music patterns and loops is a slight creativity. These music loops for a matter of fact is not only used by DJs and musicians, but can be used for various purposes like creating music projects, videos, even websites and TV and Radio programs. But creating interesting music loops is in the hands of the composer, and in today's fast paced world, composers are not worried about giving good music pieces, and they make irrelevant and unnecessary mistakes that spoil the essence of the whole piece. It shows that they are not showing dedication in what they are doing. Here are a few common errors outlined by Nadel Paris that present-day musicians make while creating a music loop, and if one avoids these amateur mistakes, then there are going to be an incredible final product.

  • This first and most terrible mistake one commits - Too synthetic. Even though one is composing an electronic music, it should also breathe and have a feel. One of the most unwanted mistakes that a musician of these days make is to use synth sounds and drum loops that comes out really rigid and barren. The solution is to clean up the tracks and loops wherever possible and introduce some live elements like clapping, pop beats, etc. and not sounds that are manipulated and created in a computer. These live beats can give life to the music, unlike the electronic sounds.

  • There are frequency clashes that should be avoided. Now-a-days, most of the musicians often use several sample loops that are present almost in the same frequency, which results in the lack of lucidity and clarity. Sounds should actually be working together and not competing with each other. It is always advisable to focus on sounds that complement one another, instead of sounds that can always stand-alone without the support of the other. A composer should choose sounds to form loops in such a way that they are not complex and go along with each other.

  • It is also important to avoid timing disaster, by listening to each of the sounds in a loop or a track very clearly. The timing is very important when two different loops are merged together, especially if one is doing a rap or a hip-hop. Perhaps a composer or a DJ may be waiting to bring in a bass loop into a hip-hop, but there is always an out-of-time which may give out a blaring sound, instead of a nice music loop or track. So, a composer should be all ears and try to catch the sound exactly on time, and if it was not possible, it is always better to stop and restart again from the beginning.

Convenient Sources for Music by Nadel Paris

Many people consider a music store at a local mall to be a convenient source for all of their music needs. When they take into account how long it takes to get to the mall and the traffic conditions that must be dealt with on each trip, they might reconsider how convenient it is to buy music at these places in town. Some people are disappointed while shopping the malls for music because the stores are lacking in the area of providing good customer service.

If they have purchased music at a land-based store before, they know that the prices are higher than other places they have found. There are certain music stores in town that offer great discounts on music but the music is not what is playing on the radios that reflect current sounds. The music they have access to might be out-of-date at times and people want to find music that is easy to access and at a good price.

When people find music stores online, they are usually at home and sitting down in their favorite chair. These people might also find other information about the music and the artist that created it.

History of Drums by Nadel Paris

History of drums began with the emergence of human civilization. Drum beating as it is popularly known has been associated with the birth of humankind. Drum and bass (commonly abbreviated to DnB, drum n bass and drum and bass) is a sort of electronic dance music also known as jungle. It is also called a membranophone, means an instrument that makes sound by striking a prolonged membrane with some type of object, typically a curved stick.

Drums consist of a hollowed out piece (called the body), a covering extended over the end of the drum, and tuning keys or pegs which stiffens or loosens the membrane to achieve different tones. It is a common notion that the body of the drum generates the sound; it is in fact the membrane and its vibration that creates the sound when struck.

Following the history of drums, it is presumed origination of drums to be as early as in 6000 BC. Mesopotamian excavations discovered small cylindrical drums dated 3000 BC. Inside caves in Peru several wall markings were found which show the use of drums in various aspects of communal life. The American Indians used gourd and wooden constructed drums for their rituals and ceremonies. Drums are not always used for creating music only. It has also been used for communication purpose.

In African tribal cultures (also in the regional culture), drums bore an important part in the use of rituals and religious ceremonies. The people of different African tribes relied on the use of drums to express themselves and important messaging was done through series of drum beats along the length of the jungle. African drums and drummers provided an addictive and unique sound that deeply influenced Western Rock and Roll music

When it was discovered in the history of drums that one player could play two or more drums at the same time, people started placing groups of drums together for one musician to play. The player not only played drums of similar types but also imported from other cultures and around the globe. The early 1930s discovered a newly found trick. Musicians found out with the proper drum placement and a lot of practice, a single player could handle a set of drums, and an entire group of drum players was not necessary anymore. This leads to the origin of the Drum kit.

Double drumming is an important development in the history of drums. Double drumming is one drummer playing more than one drums. Cymbals and tom toms, invented in China were added to drum kits of the drummer, which was fast to accommodate different set of drums. Cowbells, wooden blocks, and chimes which were the percussion additions were incorporated as well. In the flow of the history of drums, by the 1930s the typical drum kit had taken shape with the various instruments in its armory. The kit consisted of a foot pedal and bass drum, snare, hi hat cymbal, tom toms, and large hanging cymbals.

1960s saw the rise of rock drummers, who began the development of drum kits that are the standard today. More toms and cymbals, as well as the accumulation of another bass drum to boost speed were added. Electronic drums then came into being with the intention of creating sounds that traditional drums were unable to generate. The history of drums thus echoed the variable sounds and rhythms of human development

The Sound Reggae Music Makes

Its distinctive beat gives it away. There is nothing in the world that sounds like reggae music. The expected chops and the back beat by the rhythm guitar and the distinctive sound of the bass drum marks reggae as a genre by its own right. Reggae music originated from several other Jamaican music types just as great as it is like ska, rocksteady, RandB, Jazz, Calypso, and Mento.

Jamaican music is as rich as its history. The soul of each and every Jamaican song traces its roots to the black people herded onto ships, clinging to their most priceless possessions--clothing, food, and for many, their drums. These drums that traveled as far as their owners have are what brought the world priceless gifts and that are the gifts of music. The slaves used their music to fill-up their lives and sang about everything. They have songs of praise, songs of love, songs of loneliness, and songs of inspiration. It is not surprising therefore, that reggae music has been used by the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers to promote certain political issues like poverty and injustice.

From the characteristic drumbeats, Jamaican folk music has embraced innovation and has added a whole range of flavor to their indigenous music. Combining the drumbeats to a lot of different musical instruments, like the rhythm guitar, and the trumpet, produced ska, rocksteady and eventually reggae.

Reggae music swooped Jamaica just when it was about to proclaim its independence and the masses were clamoring for a beat, a sound that could articulate their emotions. Reggae rose up to the challenge and succeeded. A few years later, when the assurance of an improved quality of life and the promise of a bright tomorrow for a liberated nation came up empty reggae was still being played. But it started to serve a much higher purpose than entertainment. For the first time in its history, roots reggae took on its rebellious and defiant form. Reggae music told of stories of suffering in the shanties of Trenchtown, it told of stories of violence and corruption but most of all it told the people of Jamaica to get up and stand up for their rights.

As the country grew from bad to worse, the people started to look for a moral guidance that would give sense to the life of wretchedness they were living in. Rastafarianism answered the call of a people desperately seeking an alternative leader with convincing values of love and peace. The Rastafarian movement boomed, gained a huge following in Jamaica and reggae was the movement's music. Eventually, roots reggae would be identified with Rastafarianism and vice versa. Dreadlocks, khakis, and kaftans became the symbol of reggae attitude.

Just when it seems that the evolution of reggae has gone through so much, it began to take on another controversial form with the arrival of dancehall reggae. This new type of reggae music is so called because its raunchy lyrics only allowed it to be played in dancehalls. Dancehall reggae is a form of rebellion against roots reggae because many artists believe that reggae music has gone too mainstream that it catered more to the demands of the audience than to reggae's real spirit. Infused with a lot of techno beats and computer generated riffs, dancehall departed from old school reggae music's slow and lulling beat and enveloped a more upbeat and fast rhythm.

And then there was ragga. Ragga music could be gangsta rap's ancestor as it boldly came out with songs on violence, guns, and gangs. Many ragga songs were evidently masochistic with harsh lyrics demeaning women and praising male supremacy.

Over the course of history, ragga's forerunners saw reason and tamed down their music. A couple prominent ragga figures went back to embrace Rastafarianism and sought a live of uprightness and peace.

Reggae music has come and changed in so many ways over the years. Yet it still makes the same sound as it did several decades ago. Reggae still sings the songs that make hearts beat faster, songs that make the feet dance harder, and songs that reflect the rhythm of the soul

The Balance between Beat Making, Creativity & Copyright Law

Let me say straight off the high hat that creativity & copyright law do not make instant bedfellows! Within beat rap there is a tendency to sample, which is both quick & easy, versus "copyright ownership" highly focused on what may constitute theft. The discussion can veer between litigation on the one hand and ignorance on the other. The basic problem is how to objectively measure how much of the remixed song "borrows" from the original.

One of the current stumbling blocks to licensing copyright (and thus incentive to copy without paying) is administrative overhead and cost. Recording licenses can be obtained at a flat fee normally ranging from $100 to over $10,000. This is countered by royalties to recording owners of between 0.5 cents and 3 cents per track sold. 15% of the original new work's musical composition copyright might be assigned to the original author, and if extensive looping and reuse is employed, up to 66% may be allocated.

Non paying sampling artists have two current defense strategies that they can deploy: de minimis and fair use. De minimis is the most commonly used defense as it claims that the re-use is basically trivial and therefore does not amount to infringement. The definition of "trivial use" is normally very vague and courts can resort to using ordinary lay listeners in an attempt to untangle the issue! Fair use on the other hand can employ open parody using the justification of "social purpose" based on intended criticism or commentary.

If you really want to circumnavigate the whole copyright issue and can read music AND you are feeling the funk then Public Domain Music may be worth a look. Who knows, maybe you get an IDEA from this? Any composition (not sound recording) copyrighted before 1922 in the USA may be used without limitation. Unfortunately there is no "international copyright" so you will have to delve into your local copyright laws if outside the US.

All of this of course distracts from the intended aim of being creative. Admittedly legality only really gets in the way of creativity when enough money is involved! If you sample Pink Floyd and then distribute it widely then the chances of litigation go up. Everything should be based on an idea (the thing that makes you go) in the first place. If you add sounds later that alter your original framework or concept then that's just the way things go!

Listening to Music Enhances Our Learning Skills

In general, how does music influence learning? Experts have researched on this and have provided enriching information. One observes that music can hone creativity. Another believes that through the study of music one can examine higher creative and learning functions. Another has it that musical intelligence is one of the seven basic intelligences.

Nadel Paris a musician says that music has the ability to help people learn more effectively. It can make a considerable contribution to all of education, because these people benefit by enhancing key developmental goals such as self-esteem and creativity. Research has it that music can influence learning in core subjects as well as contribute to the attainment of core goals in learning. What is interesting to know more about is the effect of music on the learning of children. It is noticeable that small children have that fascination towards music which can be manifested when they hum, have the urge to move to music, become joyful when hearing mother's lullaby, or become excited when their favorite song is being played. If children are encouraged to learn a musical instrument, their rational, emotional, and motor modalities are being stimulated.

With regard to speech development, the fetus is capable of listening to the voices of the parents. It can already hear and even recognize music. Prenatal psychology reports that music has a remarkable influence on the development of the fetus. After birth, babies imitate the sounds they hear that usually by the age of five, their vocabulary has widened. In each developmental phase such as in preschool learning, a child develops certain abilities especially well such as movement, vision, music, speech, or emotions. To develop musically, these children need the proper stimulation at the appropriate time.

It has been researched that classical music strengthens parts of the brain that are necessary for logical thinking. When one listens to music and makes music, there are changes that are observed in certain parts of the brain. Playing a musical instrument is a complex activity because it involves the use of the intellect as one tries to comprehend, the motor skills as one performs, the emotions as one initiates, as well as the senses. Research has it that children who play violin or guitar at a young age demonstrate notable changes in brain activity. Active music making stimulates motor skills. Furthermore, music making promotes social competence. It provides motor, intellectual and emotional behavioral skills that encourage general sociability.

Parents of children who are learning to play musical instruments have noticed that their children have learned to concentrate better and longer. They also observed that they have improved their memory skills and that they have learned to approach something new in a systematic way. These parents have recognized that making music helped in developing the positive character traits of their children. They have become more disciplined through daily practice. So, the answer to the question 'does music influence learning in children?' is absolutely yes. Through music and active participation, children can achieve better balance between school and sports. It can also be an outlet for the children's anxiety and aggression so that they can better channel and express their emotions. Being influenced by music, children learn to develop an understanding and respect for art as well as appreciation for beauty. They get to be inquisitive and expand their knowledge in the different types of music.

To conclude with, apart from the learning process music does have the ability to change ones mood. It has the capability of increasing our energy level or makes us happy even on a heart-breaking circumstance. Music is not constraint to language, culture and global boundaries and that's why musicians from any country have huge fans base throughout the world.
